Is it possible to see angels and capture their messages?
Etienne Renzo answers this metaphysical question through photography.
The angel series was inspired by Wim Wenders' film "Der Himmel über Berlin", the story of the angel Damiel, who loses his invisible immortal condition to experience love and desire with human beings.
But Etienne Renzo's angels don't fly as high as Wenders'. Captured in full levitation, they are very real. For these images are also portraits of human beings attempting to rise above the literal meaning of the shot. They are images that, without any religious or spiritual dogmatism, sacralize beautiful souls and people by restoring their aura.
Ordinary angels, as it were. To see and show the ordinary angels within us today is to restore access to enchantment. As Etienne Renzo explains: "Photographing Angels means rediscovering as much as possible the magic of everyday life and the wonder of life, so that it doesn't fall into oblivion.
In this way, my photographs fulfill the task of the angels. Unveiling these images is my profane and imperfect solution to a traditionally divine task". A salutary approach at a time of widespread disenchantment, in which photography can play a part by reconnecting with the invisible, as is the case here.
The stakes are high, since it means re-establishing cosmological continuity in a fragmented, fractured world. Isn't this also the primary role of guardian angels?
